I’ve had tons of questions on how I created my Unus Annus cardigan, so I figured I’d explain it in an article!

The base of this Unus Annus cardigan is the Painted Canyon Cardigan pattern by Ashlea of HeartHookHome. I know I’ve said it before but I LOVE LOVE LOVE this pattern! It’s been the base of dozens of cardigans I’ve made and it’s super easy to customize and alter however you need! You can purchase the Painted Canyon Cardigan pattern here on Etsy.

Now on to the alterations!

For this Unus Annus cardigan I knew I wanted to do half and half colors, and incorporate elements like the hourglass and skulls into the sweater somehow. I made an hourglass chart in StitchFiddle to determine color changes needed and quickly realized that in order to have the hourglass look the way I wanted I’d need to go down a few hook sized that’s what the PCC pattern calls for.

I made a few gauge swatches to make sure the width of the hourglass wasn’t going to be too big or small on the center back of the cardigan. After that I started on the cardigan, changing colors exactly halfway in between and following the stitchfiddle chart for the hourglass as I made by way up the back. I used my body measurements more than the stitch counts following the cardigan pattern since I went down a few hook sizes.

The skull elbow patches are a pattern by Kristen’s Krazy Knits that you can find here

The BEAUTIFUL skull and rose buttons are by TheCraftBunnyStore on Etsy. Find the exact buttons here!

I created another stitchfiddle chart for the “U” and the “A” on the pockets because I wanted it to be the KH Jockco Bold font that was used in the Unus Annus logo.

You can find the downloadable, ad-free PDF charts for the hourglass and the U and A pockets here in my shop!
