If you’re new to crochet or just want a super easy pattern thats easy to memorize, this is it!

This half double crochet beanie is what I use for the template for various other beanies, like my Tiny Kong beanie and my skull beanie (and my other graphed beanies).

I usually add some sort of border to the bottom because I think it looks more finished. The most common border I do is a single crochet border, but I also like reverse single crochet too.

Materials

Terms (US)

Ch – chain
Rnd – round
Sc- single crochet
Sl st – slip stitch
St – stitch

Notes

~Ch 1 at the beginning of each round does not count as a st.
~Join at the end of each round with a sl st to the top of the first st of the round.

~Gauge: 10 hdc and 11 rows in a 4” x 4” square

Instructions

Rnd 1 – 8 hdc in a magic circle, or ch 4, st st in 1st ch and then ch 1, 8 hdc in ring. (8 hdc)
Rnd 2 – Ch 1, 2 hdc in same st. 2 hdc in each st around. (16 hdc)
Rnd 3 – Ch 1, hdc in same st. 2 hdc in next st. *hdc in next st, 2 hdc in next st* repeat from * to * around. (24 hdc)
Rnd 4 – Ch 1, hdc in same st, hdc in next st. 2 hdc in next st. *hdc in next 2 st, 2 hdc in next st* repeat from * to * around. (32 hdc)
Rnd 5 – Ch 1, hdc in same st, hdc in next 2 sts. 2 hdc in next st. *hdc in next 3 sts, 2 hdc in next st* repeat from * to * around. (40 hdc)
Rnd 6 – Ch 1, hdc in same st, hdc in next 3 sts. 2 hdc in next st. *hdc in next 4 sts, 2 hdc in next st* repeat from * to * around. (48 hdc)
Rnd 7 – Ch 1, hdc in same st, hdc in next 4 sts. 2 hdc in next st. *hdc in next 5 sts, 2 hdc in next st* repeat from * to * around. (56 hdc)
Rnd 8 – Ch 1, hdc in same st, hdc in next 5 sts. 2 hdc in next st. *hdc in next 6 sts, 2 hdc in next st* repeat from * to * around. (64 hdc)
Rnd 9 – Ch 1, hdc in same st and each st around (64 hdc)
Rnds 10-20 – repeat rnd 9
Rnd 21 – Ch 1, sc in same st and each st around (64 sc). Fasten off yarn and weave in ends.
