Crochet Terminology Glossary

Have you come across an abbreviation in a pattern while you’re crocheting and are not sure what it means? Are you not sure how to do a certain stitch? Look no further!

Below are definitions for any crochet terminology you may come across. This might be wordage, acronyms, or any other crochet related lingo!

NOTE: There are a few definitions that have asterisks (*) in them. These asterisks act as wildcards and in almost all cases, any basic stitch can replace the asterisk. For example, fp* could be fpsc for front post single crochet, or fphdc for front post half double crochet, or *2tog could be dc2tog, or sc2tog, etc.

Bead stitch – dc in st. Yarn Over (YO) and insert hook around the side of the dc you just made. Pull up a loop (you should now have three loops on your hook). YO and insert your hook in the same spot, pull up another loop. YO once more and pull up another loop. You should have 7 loops on your hook. YO and pull through all 7 loops.
BLO – back loop only –

-----C----

Crab stitch – also known as reverse single crochet, instead of working the stitches in whatever way you’re used to (so if you’re right handed you’d normally work left to right) you would crochet the opposite way. This causes the yarn to overlap the stitch in a way that creates a great border or edging!

-----D-----

DC – double crochet – YO, insert hook into next st. pull up a loop (3 loops on hook). YO, pull through two loops, YO, pull through last two loops on hook.
