One of my absolute favorite patterns, the Painted Canyon Cardigan is one of the very first patterns I ever purchased. It was released back in 2017, and I have made about two dozen cardigans in various sizes and colors/patterns since its release. I’ve incorporated my own alterations as I’ve become more familiar with crocheting over the years, and have made things like an Unus Annus inspired cardigan, a Sailor Moon inspired cardigan, one that looks like Ed’s jacket from Ed Ed n’ Eddy… I’ve made sleeveless versions and versions with a chevron lower half… and I have plans to make at least six more at the time I’m writing this lol! You can see some of what I’ve made over the years in my gallery.

Overall the Painted Canyon Cardigan pattern is great for a beginner! It uses simple stitches and has thorough explanations on how to do different stitches. The size chart is a great reference and there are sections for each size, which is nice because I can set all the pages that I don’t need aside and just have a few pages to reference. The sizes in the paid pattern range from 0 to 28W, and Ashlea has the child sizes available for free on her site (and you can of course get the printable versions in her Etsy shop).
The instructions are very detailed and provide options for inside or outside pockets (I have done both, I prefer the outside pockets as a style preference but both are super easy) and an option for either a hood or a collar (also have done both, the hood is super floppy and fun lol). You also have the option to make it close with buttons or a belt closure, so overall this pattern is super customizable! It’s got detailed instructions on how to make a gauge swatch and adjust hook size if the swatch is off, which is something that’s VERY important for a wearable item especially!
I absolutely recommend it to people starting out in their crochet journey, it’s a great first wearable to make!
